The ISBN Standard was first published in 1972. Since then the system has spread worldwide and there are now over 150 ISBN registration agencies providing ISBNs for publishers in more than 200 countries and territories. 

• The International ISBN Agency assigns unique group prefixes and ranges to each ISBN registration agency and this ensures that each ISBN that is issued is unique worldwide.
