information professionals, IFLA supports and coordinates research and
studies, cooperates with other international organizations in the field
of information, documentation and archives, and serves as a body
through which librarianship can be represented in matters of
international interest.
IFLA's Core Programmes represent IFLA's international efforts in the

Uniform Resource Name
The URN (Uniform Resource Name) is an identification system for
electronic information, not limited to publications. The URN syntax
allows the integration of the ISBN and other international standard
numbers if so desired. Under the Nordic Metadata Project a proposal was
made to use URNs for the identification of the legal deposit in
European national libraries, provided no other international standard
numbers were assigned to the item. The use and function of URNs would
be very similar to DOIs.

International Standard Musical Work Code
The International Standard Musical Work Code (ISWC) specifies a means
of uniquely identifying intellectual property, such as musical works,
of the kinds which are within repertoires controlled by members of
CISAC (The International Confederation of Societies of Authors and
Composers). It standardises and promotes internationally the use of
standard codes so that intellectual properties can be uniquely
distinguished from one another within computer databases and related
documentation. It is thus indispensable for copyright managment. The
ISWC identifies a creation, not its physical manifestations.
